Construction and demolition waste is the largest waste stream in the EU, accounting for more than one-third of the total waste generated. As such, it plays a key role in achieving the EU’s circular economy and decarbonization goals, particularly the target of doubling the use of circular materials by 2030, as outlined in the Clean Industrial Deal.
At the same time, EU policies and legislative initiatives are increasingly focused on making the construction sector more sustainable, reducing supply chain dependence on third countries, and promoting the reuse and recycling of raw materials.
Today, the construction sector is reflecting on a key truth: without demolition, there is no reuse. Without circular demolition or dismantling, there can be no secondary construction materials, which are urgently needed to reduce CO₂ emissions, decrease dependence on primary raw materials, reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, and advance the circular economy.
A national overview of all ongoing initiatives is therefore being compiled. The aim is to identify gaps, establish partnerships, and provide additional support where needed. Because one thing is certain: only by working together can we create a sustainable construction sector.
Standards are essential to this process, making them another important topic at the event. Achieving the necessary transition also requires identifying the equipment and tools needed to implement it as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
